Happy Thanksgiving! In the spirit of my favorite holiday, I want to share how thankful I am for books.
When I was entering my freshman year of college, I read The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. I read it at a low point in my life, and it inspired me to read more. In the following year, I would go on to read 63 books, which was well over my Goodreads challenge goal of 45 books. My freshman year of college was difficult, but I always had a book in my hand to keep me occupied and happy. Since then, I have not been able to read quite as many books as that, but I am always thankful when I have the opportunity to read.
This year, one of my friends and I read the same books, and we discussed them together. Books have given me some of my most amazing friends with unbreakable bonds, and for that, I am forever grateful. These books include Daughters of Sparta and Circe. Both books that are amazing and center on Greek mythology. I mentioned in my previous post how I fell in love with Greek mythology at a young age, and my 22-year-old self still loves it.
I'm thankful that books have demonstrated healthy relationships and character growth. I am not someone who does well with change, but seeing characters change and grow over the course of a book inspires me to embrace change rather than detest it. In the words of Lewis Carol, "It's no use going back to yesterday because I was a different person then" (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland).
I hope to inspire this sense of gratitude and passion within other students with our book drive. We are so excited to officially start our book drive in a few days on November 29th! If you can't donate books, please consider donating in our GoFundMe!
